Celebrating 10 Years of StoneMyers Law

Dear Family, Friends and Clients–

I am grateful to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of StoneMyers Law.  It is hard to believe it has been 10 years since we opened our doors and began serving estate planning clients in our South Austin office.

I went to law school because I wanted to be able to help people and started out practicing (in Delaware) in the field of patent litigation.  I used my science background to advocate for companies who owned an invention (or the accused infringing company) in navigating a lawsuit over rights to a patent.  The work was both challenging and fulfilling, but I yearned for a more personal connection.

When my children were born, as most parents do, I worried about them. I worried about their safety, I worried about who would take care of them if something happened to me.  For me, planning has always helped stem my worries.  Having a plan that appoints the appropriate guardians, trustees and executors helped to allay some of my fears.  I think an estate plan could be called a plan for peace, since having the plan created peace in my life! It became clear to me in conversations with other parents and friends that most people have similar fears.  Whether it is planning care for a child or taking care of our spouse after our death or worrying about having bills paid if we become incapacitated, we all have our worries.

After moving to Texas and seeing other parents and friends struggle with the same fears I had, I made it my mission to bring them peace through planning.  I took the Texas bar and became licensed in Texas.  I opened StoneMyers Law and told everyone I knew that I would love to be able to help them, their family and friends.  What started as a trickle turned into a wonderful flow of clients.  One of my early clients even convinced me to set up a YELP page (thank you Nick!)  My firm became blessed with not only friends becoming clients but many new people, too, and having the opportunity to partner with them in creating their own estate plan.

While some things have changed, many things, including our core beliefs remain the same.  We began seeing most clients in person (and some via telephone). We now have access to Zoom technology which allows us to “meet” clients all across the State of Texas.  While we still hold in-office will signings, we also have a refined set of instructions for clients to sign their documents in a location of their choice.  My reason for beginning this business remains unchanged – peace of mind.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude.  First to God, for blessing me with the skills and passion to practice as a counselor to my clients.  Second, to my husband, children and family for encouraging me to begin this business (and for the sacrifices they have made for me).  Third, to all my friends who not only worked hard as my personal testimonials (RL, JC, NC, RK, RP, to name a few) but also have come in and worked alongside me in the office and as witnesses to the many document signings.  Finally, to all my current and former clients, thank you, for trusting me to help you with such an important and emotional event as your estate planning and for entrusting us with your own referrals of family and friends. I look forward to many more good years serving the Austin community.

Yours truly,

Melissa Stone Myers
